The Lost Weekend

Image
A lthough my Saturday was overscheduled, Sunday made up for it. I got up, watched CBS Sunday Morning , which had a feature on Aaron McGruder of The Boondocks and Carlos Santana , did a few things online, and ate breakfast. My eyelids became heavy so I thought I would just take a quick nap. I must have accidently sprinkled sleeping powder into my pancake batter instead of cinnamon because I slept the whole day away. I woke up to discover that although I had lost my Sunday, I had gained an hour. I forgot that Daylight Savings started today. I don't really care for DLS but I will take an extra hour of sleep if it is an option. I didn't know that: Beginning in 2007 , Daylight Saving Time is extended one month and begins for most of the United States at: 2 a.m. on the Second Sunday in March to 2 a.m. on the First Sunday of November. ( See chart below. ) The new starts and stop dates were set in the Energy Policy Act of 2005.

If he hollers let him go....

Image
S omeone sent this to my email. I've seen it before and I may have even posted it to the old blog. I had to post it today because it resonates so much truth. I was just having this conversation on the way home last night. The italicized sentences really stand out for me. The bold ones are what I actually seem to get right. >>> Listen If a man wants you, nothing can keep him away. If he doesn't want you, nothing can make him stay. Stop making excuses for a man and his behavior. Allow your intuition (or spirit) to save you from heartache. Stop trying to change yourself for a relationship that's not meant to be. Slower is better. Never live your life for a man before you find what makes you truly happy. If a relationship ends because the man was not treating you as you deserve then heck no, you can't "be friends". A friend wouldn't mistreat a friend. Don't settle. If you feel like...

Horoscope

I love this horoscope! Don't hold back. If there's something beautiful out there that you want (and there will be plenty), go for it. The more beauty you surround yourself with, the happier you'll be. And the happier you are, the more beautiful you'll be. And the more beautiful you are, the more people will be attracted to you. Hmmm, are you starting to sense a pattern? Get out and do what you enjoy and people won't be able to help being drawn to you.

Caffinate Me: An ode to my dark friend

Image
I have been trying to wean myself off of coffee lately. I thought it might be a good time to replace my morning cup o' joe with a nice healthy cup of tea now that the weather is cool. The only problem is that I.LOVE.COFFEE! I love the aroma of fresh brewed coffee, the taste, the smell of fresh beans. I.LOVE.COFFEE. I was an early coffee drinker. My family saw nothing wrong with giving a child a cup o' java in the morning lightened with evaporated milk and syrupy with lots of sugar. C'est bon ! I am sitting here now, sipping a cup of green tea trying to devise a plan to make a detour to Star.bu.cks for some liquid crack. I woke up this morning with what felt like a hangover, only I hadn't been drinking anything but water and tea. I think it has to do with the fact that I haven't sipped on any caffine in any form for over two days. That is typically when the withdrawal symptoms begin...the headaches, the grogginess, abd the crankiness. Like any other addiction, one m...

Three The Hard Way

Image
T his piece reminds me of mis amigas. I am the one in the middle. The three of us are very different in looks and mannerisms but we have some of the same habits. One thing we have in common is procrastination. We all seem to live by the mantra, why do today what you can put off until tomorrow? For this reason we have learned to laugh about our "issues." Which brings me to the topic of this post. Once again it is time for the circle of friends to celebrate and once again we are doing last minute preparations. And for some reason everyone seems to think that I am the Queen of last minute planning. Here is a little background, on your right is the friend who we decided we would surprise the night of my housewarming for her birthday. My friend on your left was supposed to come over and help set up for the party. Why was she the last person to arrive to the party??? I think we were cutting the cake when she got there. There were similar incidents...the Kwanzaa party, the bridal ...

Blogging personality

Image
Your Blogging Type is Confident and Insightful You've got a ton of brain power, and you leverage it into brilliant blog. Both creative and logical, you come up with amazing ideas and insights. A total perfectionist, you find yourself revising and rewriting posts a lot of the time. You blog for yourself - and you don't care how popular (or unpopular) your blog is! What's Your Blogging Personality? T here might actually be something to this...I kind of like the brilliant part! I do tend to overthink and a blog seems to be a good outlet for all the thoughts running rampant through my mind. Not sure if my creativity comes through on my blog because alot of times I am just getting my thoughts out. I think I have so much going on in my head because I hoard information. Whether it is from books, blogs, periodicals or personal observations. I think I need to read this book but then maybe it might contribute to the problem because I will be overthinking my overthinking. Hmmm. The p...

Image
W e bout to throw dem bows We bout to swang dem thangs It's 'bout to be a what? Girlfight! Oh! I know you don't want me to split yo dome! Girl you makin me really mad... Oh! I know you don't want me to split yo dome! I'm about to bruise ya face and it's sad... - Brooke Valentine (listen) I 've mention in a past post that I am taking a class . Last week was our first quiz. We were all expecting a written exam but the instructor, decided to make it an oral exam. So she called people in pairs to go to the front of the class and answer questions from chapter one. Well, I was out of the room when she started this process so I wound up being in the last group to go up. The other people who hadn't yet been up included a muslim woman (MW) who wears the full jilbab and hijab , and a woman(LW) who had come in about an hour late that day and seemed a little off whenever she was called on during class. The three of us wen...

Too Much of a Good Thing

Image
L ately I have been going to a lot of orientations for different organizations I am interested in working with. Over the past few weeks I have attended about four orientations. One was with an group I am pretty excited to work with. Then, there is another organization that I am very interested in working with offering an orientation in December. My concern is that I am going to wind up over-committing myself to one or more of these groups because they are all interesting programs that I really want to become involved with. So, for now I am committing my time to one, well two if you count my pet project, and I may possibly squeeze in another in the future. Don't mind me, I'm just thinking out loud.

Serendipitous

( ) Pronunciation Key (s r n-d p -t ) The faculty of making fortunate discoveries by accident. The fact or occurrence of such discoveries. An instance of making such a discovery. A round this time last week I headed downtown to an orientation for my latest pet project. As I emerged from the 59th Street Columbus Circle subway station I noticed a stylish woman waiting on the island for the light to change. She reminded me of my friend Diva A so I softly called her name, nonchalantly so I wouldn't embarrass myself. After about the third try the woman turned around and sure enough it was Ms. Diva. She had changed her look again, which she does often since she works as a model. We had actually been trying to connect for a couple of months through voicemail and email. We embraced and crossed the street walking and talking quickly since we were both late for our respective appointments. When I informed her where I was headed she told me that she is going the same place and we picked ...

Monday Groove 102405

Image
A Escuchar (smooth and mellow) M uch like the collage to the left and the assortment of music on my Monday playlist (above), my brain is functioning on random. Random but relevant. I have half written posts sitting in draft mode and other ideas for entries in my journal but none of them have yet made it to the point of being published. I think I am so full of ideas right now that I haven't been able to focus on anything long enough to work through one and then start up another. What I've been needing is a huge dose of discipline. My energy is just all over the place right now. I am in that place where I feel like the next big thing is about to happen in my life. An anxious energy but it also leaves me paralysed, not knowing whether I should go right or left. So I sit still and wait to see what life has to offer next.

Right from the Heart

Image
Why do we allow people who have no right to our heart have access to it? People who should be trying to heal their own pain yet tend to inflict it upon others who actually want to help them through their healing process? But that isn't what this post is about...I refuse to use my keystrokes to cry and moan about someone who doesn't have the self-respect to love himself enough to do what he knows is right - morally and legally. Until you do right.... So, I move forward. More to come.

Man, have some cheese with that whine!

Image
As we grow up, we learn that even the one person that wasn't supposed to ever let you down probably will. You will have your heart broken probably more than once and it's harder every time. You'll break hearts too, so remember how it felt when yours was broken. You'll fight with your best friend. You'll blame a new love for things an old one did. You'll cry because time is passing too fast, and you'll eventually lose someone you love. So take too many pictures, laugh too much, and love like you've never been hurt because every sixty seconds you spend upset is a minute of happiness you'll never get back.

Back to Work Groove: Listen

Oh Seven...

7 things I plan to do before I die : Learn several other languages . Mentioned this in an older post. Own some land and/or a business or two. Preferably land and a business. Travel to at least two or three more continents. Africa, Australia, Europe . Be at complete and utter peace for more than a few months at a time . Free myself from debt. And have equity. Have a lifetime companion. Someone who loves, honors and respects me. Feel like I have completed my life's mission. Hopefully I will know when that is. 7 things I can do : Sing . I can hold a note when I try. Cook . Somewhat, sorta' kinda' in my own special way. Read. I love the written word and have been reading since I was around three. Teach. It's not as easy as it looks. Love . In so many different forms. Swim. After almost drowning twice, I'd better had learned to do this - and well. Drive. On the freeways of Cali so this one may be debatable to some. 7 things I cannot do : Maintain a healthy relationship ...

B12: The Columbus Edition

Image
W e all learned in school that Columbus "discovered" a new world in 1492. So in the spirit of "discovering" things that were already there, I decided to focus my dozen on new "discoveries" that I made this weekend. New blogs! - 13 Steps from Harlem , Home Girl , Clay Cane , and Viqi French Fever are just a few that you can link to on the blogroll to your left. New TV shows - I discovered some new shows this weekend like " Close to Home " on CBS. New music - in addition to the luscious playlist of duets on Honey.soul , I spent this rainy weekend scouring the web for new music to add to my iTunes playlist. New cable channels - Current.tv , Fox Movie Channel and On Demand which is tucked way up in the channel line up! New sites that host online media (check a Different Kitchen in the blogroll). New books to read: Road to Wealth , Black Wealth, White Wealth , and The Hidden Cost of Being African American . New opportunities to pursue. New autumn...

Back to Life

Image
Back to life, back to reality Back to the here and now -Soul II Soul The blue fog has lifted and I seem to be back in the land of the living. I actually got some sleep and woke up relatively refreshed. I lit an incense and listened to some Miles Davis this morning. I felt my spirit shifting with each plume of rising smoke. I used to start every day with prayer, meditation and inspirational music but fell out of that practice. It seemed to start my days off on the right foot. God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference . Sometimes the music might be Miles Davis Kind of Blue , other days it might be a gospel artist like Fred Hammond , and some days it may just be Encouragement . Always putting off my living for tomorrow It's time to step out on faith, I've gotta show my faith It's been elusive for so long, but freedom is mine today I've gotta step out on faith,...

The City that Never Sleeps

Image
I haven't been able to sleep for close to a month now. Although it was mostly attributed to the recent hurricane situations, part of it is simply the result of my body getting off of my regular sleeping pattern and never getting back on track. At one point, my sleep pattern was completely turned around. I would stay awake until five or six in the morning and then wake up around noon. Some days I wouldn't even get six hours of sleep. Sleeping pills weren't even helping me. I tried reducing or eliminating stimulants like caffine and watching TV. It helped some but I still couldn't get a really good night of sleep. I've never had insomnia for such a long period of time. Finally Friday night I fell into a semblance of my regular sleeping pattern after more than a month of trying to force myself to sleep. I thought I was on to something but then Saturday night rolled around and my lovely neighbors decided that they would help me stay awake because I obviously didn't...
