Taking the bull by the horns

Welcome to September! It seems that I am on a monthly blogging schedule over here. This week we officially got into high gear at work and I will say it was rough but I think I handled it well. I am learning that there are bumps in the road and they are just part of everyday life. I wish I had learned this earlier in life. It would have saved me a lot of unnecessary pain and misery. What happened this week? My car broke down! My car NEVER breaks down. One of the worst possible times for it to happen but I dealt with it. Thank God I have resources that I can fall back on. I am grateful! I am also feeling some negative energy being directed toward me from colleagues. I had to do some real internal work to keep from being triggered. I feel like God is testing me. I think I have grown. I pray I stay strong. I pray that God places his arms of protection around me. I have some challenges facing me this year but I hope that maintain I positive attitude. Last year I also had challenges ...

Routines are so important

Good Morning Secret and Silent Followers, Happy Saturday! What do you have planned for this beautiful almost fall-i sh weekend? Can you believe it is almost time for apple picking and picking out pumpkins? Yeah, summer went by fast. Honestly, there was a patch where it was dragging - which don't get me wrong was perfectly fine with me - then all of sudden it sped up and here it is practically the end of summer. Anyhow, I have spent the summer learning about this new online playing field and baby it is nothing like how it was when I first started blogging. Social media has changed the game and this little millennials are out here cranking out this mass produced content as a numbers game. Algorithms and analytics. None of that mattered when we used to blog from the heart. It's crazy how something that started out as passion projects as turned into what it is now. All of that is say that I am making no headway. I mean, I can't create engagement or draw traffic to my sight....

I didn't realize it had been so long

I apologize for not updating. I have just been living and loving life. I turned 50 this year. That's so crazy to me because I am officially middle age. I don't feel 50. I feel the same as ever. I made a commitment to myself this year. That I would do everything in my power to preserve my physical and mental health. I want to be healthy and strong. I went to Mexico for my birthday trip and was hit with some type of respiratory infection that I couldn't shake. I was sick for a good 2 months. Once I was able to sleep it finally left my body. I am learning to listen to my body and stop pushing it when it is clearly telling me to rest. I think I am also so sensitive to other people's energy that not being around a lot of negativity helped. I know I say it every year but this year I have been committed to self-care. The difference is that this year I am really doing. I guess it is combination of being sick at the beginning of the summer and turning 50 this year. I have sl...

Protecting my peace at all costs

Image
Beautiful and peaceful Jamaica My goal this year is to protect my peace. I am in a very different mind space and do not wish to be pulled into a vortex of negativity. I woke up this morning realizing that I let a lot of important things go because I did not have the mental capacity to deal with them. My mental state was so compromised it impacted me physically. It has been years since I have lived. No, I mean really lived. I knew I was in a bad place but I didn't realize how deep in I was. It is as if a veil has been lifted and I am exposed to sunlight after being imprisoned. I want to stay in the light. This most recent depression was different from the other deep depressions I experienced which is why I thought I was just functionally depressed and not severely depressed. But I wasn't functioning. I was barely functioning. I think as black people we take our mental health for granted. It was only by the grace of God that I was lifted up out of that situation that was...

April showers bring May flowers

I am a little over a month away from being a half century old. I honestly don't feel like it. This year has been one of renewal. I feel like I have come back to life and I could easily live another full, rich 50 years if things continue to go as they have been. Perhaps living in misery for so long has given me a new appreciation for life. I still have bad days but nothing like they used to be. My mental health and well being is so much better than it used to be. My finances are so much better. My relationships are better. Negativity kills.

The bare minimum

This weekend I did what, in my mind, is a lot. While I slept in Saturday, I did head out to run errands. I have been doing more and more each weekend. I have been back on track with taking care of myself and I realized (no, really realized) how much I have been neglecting my self-care routine. Even in New York at my brokest I would maintain my self-care routine. I would have regular manicure and pedicures, eyebrow waxes or threading appointments, and even hair appointments. When I first moved to this area I maintained that but as I started to slip into depression during the last couple of years I let everything go. Yesterday I went to the mall for a massage, eyebrow threading, and brunch at The Cheesecake Factory. Because I am adjusting my diet I hadn't had pancakes in ages. They were so delicious and the portion was just right. I also bought hair products from Kiehl's and an eyeshadow palette from Urban Outfitters. I can't wait to play in it since I threw out a lot of m...

Cleaning up my life

Image
It took me all of these years to finally seemingly "get my life together." My life is orderly and comfortable. Perhaps it is living in Maryland in particular that causes me to get my &%$@ together. My apartment is clean. I just need to deep clean a couple of areas but my rooms are clean and orderly otherwise. It smells so good in here! I bought some decor items from Walmart and Big Lot other week to add some more homey touches. My wardrobe is a dream come true. I love getting dressed now because I have so many cute clothes that fit my style and my body. So today I focused on getting my car cleaned. I couldn't stand to look at it anymore. It was covered in grime, salt, and bird poo. The inside was equally as filthy. I stopped at the first car wash I saw and got the most expensive cleaning. I realized that I needed a tip so I walked over the 7-Eleven to get money out of the ATM and when I came back they had found an old ATM from another account that must have fallen...
