Cooking from a can

A little cousin posted a picture of a plate on Facebook. She wrote something like, 'See, I'm not just a pretty face. I can cook too.'

Now, let me tell you what I saw. Some kind of unidentifiable protein (chicken?), Kraft mac and cheese (trademark straight macaroni and neon yellow coloring) and canned string beans (again, trademark cut and color).  Is that considered cooking?

I cook from cans too, but if I can cook fresh or frozen it is preferred. I think it is unacceptable that restaurants cook from cans. When you go to a restaurant, you want freshly prepared food that you wouldn't take the time to prepare yourself at home. I bring this up because a friend contacted me to say someone was visiting from out of town and wanted to eat at Sylvia's. Now, I'm not trying to knock Sylvia's, but people have complained that her food over the last few years (OK, maybe 20 years) has primarily come from cans. Now, this isn't too far fetched since she does have a line of canned foods. When I thought about the food I ate at her restaurant when I first moved to New York, it was indeed delicious, but I could see how some of might have come from a can.

We have to do better for ourselves and demand better from those we are patronizing. Is it really cooking if it comes from a can?
